Language Information - Bosnian

Bosnian

Philological information on "Bosnian" was prepared by the translation studies division of Dijital Tercüme.

Bosnian is regarded as a language spoken by Bosnians living in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Bosnians make up more than half of the population of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Bosnian is one of the official languages of the country. Bosnia Herzegovina is a country in the Balkans with an area of 51.129 km² and a population of approximately 4.500.000 people; the official name of the country is "Bosnia and Herzegovina".

The three ethnic groups (Bosniaks, Serbs, and Croats) in the country speak different varieties of the same language. In general the people of Bosnia-Herzegovina are called Bosnians. However, due to the historical affinity we share, today Bosnian implies Bosniaks, i.e. Bosnian Muslims, in our language. Therefore, Bosnian is the language usually spoken by Bosnian Muslims. Particularly in the last years, it has started to differ significantly from Croatian and Serbian in terms of style and vocabulary. It is written in the Latin alphabet like Croatian. Those who learn this language can also easily speak and write in Serbian and Croatian due to the similarities in basic concepts or words with a very close grammatical structure. It has complex grammar rules, a complicated syntax and sentence structures. Melodically, it is a very fast paced language to speak. It contains a lot of Turkish words due to historical affiliations. The Bosnian alphabet consists of 30 letters: 4 of these are vowels and 26 are consonants. However, despite this, words with consecutive consonants that are hard to pronounce are not very common. Bosnian also has genders assigned to objects like many other Western languages (feminine objects, masculine objects or neutral objects). Gender is not defined in nouns (the, a) in Bosnian, yet it is very easy to understand from the words. Each noun has a gender: Nouns show femininity, masculinity or neutrality. There are some tips to distinguish these. Masculine (singular) nouns end with a consonant. Masculine (plural) nouns end with the letter "i". Feminine nouns usually end with the letter "a". Very few of them may end in consonants. Feminine (plural) nouns end with the letters "e" or "i".

Bosnian can be learned in private language courses in our country. In order to succeed at learning Bosnian, good verbal skills, a good memory, enthusiasm for learning foreign languages, and an interest in literature are necessary. Those who have learned Bosnian can work as translators and interpreters in institutions that are engaged in commercial or cultural relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina. The complexity of Bosnian grammar makes it a hard language for Europeans to learn. However, between Turkish and Bosnian, which come from the same language family, the sentence logic as well as many words are similar to each other which makes Bosnian easier to learn for Turks and Turkish easier for Bosniaks compared to other European countries.
